Flip The Script – unlocking the mindset to success

go for no!

I’m talking today about one of my all-time favourite mindset shifts for network marketers - and that’s going for no.

Yes, you heard me right. Not “Go for Yes.”
 Go. For. No.
It sounds like madness, doesn’t it? But if you’ve read the brilliant little book Go for No by Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz, you’ll know - it’s actually magic.

You see, in network marketing - and in life - we’re taught to chase the yes.
We’re told success is all about getting people to say “YES” to our offer, our product, our opportunity.

But what happens when we hear no?

We make it mean all sorts of things:

  • “I’m rubbish at this.”

  • “They think I’m annoying.”

  • “Maybe I should quit and become a barista in Bali…”

But Go for No flips the script.
It says: Success is not built on the yeses. It’s built on your willingness to hear no - over and over again - and keep going anyway. Some might call this delusional self confidence.

the goats have this!

Some of the greatest of all time achievers have this sort of resilient belief, in abundance.

Walt Disney

Before creating the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor who said he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”
He also had multiple businesses fail before Disneyland ever came to life - and was turned down over 300 times before securing funding for Disney World.

Sara Blakely (Founder of Spanx), saviour of all wedding outfits

When Sara Blakely was starting out, she heard no from manufacturers, buyers, and industry insiders who didn’t get the concept. She kept going - pitching in person, demonstrating the product, and cold calling retailers.
 Today, she’s a billionaire.

Colonel Sanders

Rejected over 1,000 times before finally finding someone who would invest in his fried chicken recipe. Today, KFC is one of the largest fast-food chains in the world. Who doesn’t agree it’s finger lickin’ good and would never have come into existence if he’d given up at the first 999 noes.

The lesson here is that persistence beats polish. You don’t need everyone to say yes - you just need to keep going until someone does. And then do it again. The rejections don’t define your future - your willingness not to give up does.

SO what if…

Instead of tracking how many people say yes, what if you started tracking your NOs? What if hearing “no” isn’t the end… but the beginning of success for you? Because here's the wild thing - the more NOs you collect, the closer you are to a YES.

Here’s what the authors noted:

✔ Top performers - in sales, in business, in life - fail more often than average performers. Why? They get more noes. They hear more rejection.

Michael Jordan

He was cut from his high school basketball team. Bet you didn’t know that!
Michael Jordan once said:

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games... I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Failure is the training ground of success.

✔ Noes are just part of the job - actually 90% of the job.

Top performers see NO as data. As progress. As a sign they’re in motion, not sitting still. In other words they take more action and don’t let the no’s throw them off course.

Set a No goal

So instead of setting a goal to get 5 yeses this week - what if your goal was to get 50 NOs? Because here’s the magic: the more NOs you go for…
👉 the more yeses you’ll end up getting.

It becomes a game. A challenge. A mindset shift

And it’s basic maths. Let’s say you know that on average you need to reach out to 10 people to get 1 yes. That means 9 NOs.

And for every yes you earn $50 – but actually when you think about you earn $50 for asking the question 10 times (9 nos and 1 yes) so every answer has equal worth $50 / 10 = 5  - so that means that every no you get is worth $5! Don’t want to join my business? Thanks for the 5 bucks!!

 Therefore every no isn’t a setback - it’s a step forward - and it’s worth $5!

YOU’RE ABLE TO GET IN THE GAME

🎯 Your goal becomes rejection.
Not because we love the sting of it - but because we understand that every no is proof that we're in the game.

Think of the most successful people you know in this industry. Are they the ones waiting to be perfect before they message someone?
Nope. They’re the ones taking messy action, racking up noes - and learning with the noes how to do it better every time, failure is the best teacher.

track the no’s!

So challenge to flip the script - go for the NO

Set a No Goal - how many noes can you collect this week?

In fact - I’ve made you a little Go For No Tracker you can use to keep score and make it fun. It’s like a sales tracker, but with brutal rejection at the heart of it! And that’s ok.

Every time someone says no thank you, not right now, or any of the very polite British ways of saying no - I’ll think about it… Sounds great, let me check with my husband… - that’s a no, track it!  For clarity for any gentlemen reading this, no husband has ever been ‘checked with’ about anything that a woman  actually wants to do.

And instead of shrinking away - you celebrate it.
Because that means you’re showing up.
You’re asking.
You’re in the arena. You’re in the game and eventually, because this is just numbers and a game of probability - odds are that you’ll eventually win.

Go For No Tracker

Now, let’s be clear - Go for No isn’t about being pushy or spammy. It’s not about pestering people who’ve already said no.

It’s about not letting the fear of rejection keep you from reaching out in the first place.

It’s about unhooking your self-worth from the outcome.

And that’s powerful.

Because when you remove the sting of no… You become unstoppable.

You stop worrying about saying the perfect thing and start taking bold, imperfect action.
You start having real conversations instead of rehearsed pitches.
You build resilience, confidence - and yes, a better business.

So go out there this week, get gloriously uncomfortable, collect your noes - and trust that the yeses will take care of themselves.

Because in this business yes is the destination, but no is how you get there.
